Instagram DM Sales
Should I put prices in captions or answer in DMs?
Direct answer
Post prices in captions when your goal is efficiency, and route to DMs when your goal is conversation and conversion. The strongest setup for most regional stores is both: price visible in the caption to qualify buyers, DMs answered instantly to close them. What kills sales is neither option: hiding prices AND answering slowly.
The honest tradeoff
| Price in caption | Price only in DM | |
|---|---|---|
| DM volume | Lower, more qualified | Higher, many just price-checking |
| Buyer trust | High (transparent) | Lower (feels like a game) |
| Conversation starts | Fewer | Many more |
| Works when DMs go unanswered | Somewhat | Not at all |
The "DM for price" tactic exists because conversations convert, and it does produce more threads. But it only works if every thread gets a fast, human-quality answer; otherwise you have manufactured hundreds of disappointed buyers and a comment section that says "they never reply."
The combined play
- Put the price in the caption. Transparency filters out pure browsers and builds trust with everyone else.
- Invite the DM for the next step: "DM us your size and city for availability and shipping."
- Answer those DMs in seconds, because they are now high-intent: the customer knows the price and is still talking.
With answering automated, the economics shift: you can afford unlimited conversation starts because each one costs nothing to handle. That is when routing to DMs stops being a risk and becomes a funnel; it is the pattern behind DM-first stores like Bronze growing sales 13x in a month.
