COD Fundamentals
What is RTO (return to origin)?
Direct answer
RTO, short for return to origin, is when a shipped order comes back to the store undelivered. The customer refused it, never answered the courier, or gave a bad address. On COD orders you earn nothing, yet you still pay shipping both ways, so RTO is the biggest silent cost in COD e-commerce.
The most common causes of RTO
- The customer ordered impulsively and changed their mind before delivery.
- The courier could not reach the customer (phone off, wrong number, no answer).
- The address was incomplete or wrong, so delivery failed.
- The customer did not have the cash ready at the moment of delivery.
- The order took too long to arrive and the customer bought elsewhere.
Why RTO hurts more than a normal return
A regular return at least started with a payment. An RTO never produced revenue at all. You pay the outbound shipping, the return shipping, and the repacking labor. The product is locked in transit for one to three weeks, and fast-moving items may come back out of season or slightly damaged.
Most RTO causes trace back to one root: nobody talked to the customer between checkout and the courier's doorbell. That is why order confirmation, ideally within minutes of checkout, is the single highest-leverage fix.
